Managing an R&D Team in Biotechnology

Presentation

Why participate?

Support scientific profiles transitioning into roles involving human resources management by introducing key management concepts and applying them in the biotechnology context.

Training Context:

The role of a manager within an R&D team in biotechnology is quite unique and requires specific approaches and skills. Hierarchical structures are often challenged by highly complementary scientific expertise. Additionally, the R&D world has its own specific codes regarding meetings/lab meetings and how objectives are measured. For example, it is crucial to understand how to define job objectives, since in biotechnology, the absence of a scientific result is still considered a result. This also affects how team motivation should be managed.

Learning objectives

  • Understand the roles and responsibilities in R&D in biotechnology: Clarify and effectively communicate one's role within the biotech R&D team.
  • Formalize and optimize relationship dynamics: Analyze and improve both formal and informal interactions with stakeholders.
  • Manage within the biotechnology R&D environment: Apply management techniques adapted to scientific teams and projects.
  • Leverage collective intelligence: Define measurable objectives and motivate a diverse team based on skills and profiles.
  • Make decisions and manage complex situations: Develop decision-making skills and manage complex scenarios, including remote work and public health crises.

Teaching methods

This training, which combines in-person and virtual formats, uses interactive and topic-specific teaching methods tailored to management in biotechnology, including:

  • Role-playing and group debriefing
    • Objective-setting interviews
    • Year-end performance reviews
    • Giving and receiving feedback
    • Paraphrasing exercises
    • Technical interviews adapted to employees' autonomy levels
    • Leading meetings/lab meetings
  • Perception workshops
    • Intra-company case study: participants assess how they view their roles and missions versus how others perceive them. Both perspectives are analyzed and discussed.
    • Inter-company case study: participants introduce each other in pairs, then present the other person’s roles and missions to the group.
  • Individual workshop on internal relationships: participants draw their relationship network within the company, present it to the group, which then provides feedback and suggestions.
  • Fun video clips used as a basis for reflection and discussion on management behaviors.
  • Fieldwork assignments: participants will identify a real-life management situation to work on during the following month. The outcomes will be presented during a virtual classroom session.
