Cross-disciplinary skills

Level base -

Patent law applied to biopharmaceuticals.

Presentation

Why participate?

Understand the principles of patent law and its specificities in the field of biopharmaceuticals.

Training Context:

Start-ups, very small and small-to-medium-sized enterprises (VSEs and SMEs), as well as academic laboratories and large corporations, all need to equip themselves to protect their activities and inventions. The cost of a patent often requires making choices and defining a protection and/or defense strategy. Unfortunately, patent law is still rarely taught in scientific programs. Yet it is from science that inventions arise.

Learning objectives

  • Understand what a patent is: the concept of temporality (duration of protection) and territoriality (geographical scope)
  • Know how to read a patent and understand its structure
  • List the exclusions from patentability in the field of biotechnology
  • Identify and explain the specific features of patents as applied to medicines
  • Search for a patent in a database, identify its status (under examination, granted, abandoned, expired) and understand the scope of protection it provides

Teaching methods

Experience sharing, slide presentations, document analysis, quizzes.
